The Goosey Moment
As had always been the case against Australia in the World Cup Ireland were the underdogs, but in Melbourne in 2003 they took the defending champions right to the wire. This was in part thanks to an incredible try from legend Brian O’Driscoll which brought Ireland to within a point and gave them a real shot at a famous upset. 30 minutes remained when the ball was recycled from an Ireland scrum and came to O’Driscoll. He wasn’t far from the line but had an impossibly tight angle to it, with gold shirts flying across to cover. The gap closed on O’Driscoll as he launched himself one armed, Ireland’s very own Superman, towards the corner to touch down the ball. The TMO an age in deciding, but it was a perfect try and Ireland were right back in it.
